Stephen Gardner is an ardent drawer. His realistic representations reveal a unique blend of traditional influences and modern sensibilities. He makes charcoal drawings in his studio, and also works extensively on-site in his sketchbooks. He finds satisfaction in the way that each of these drawing approaches enriches the other. Gardner is the author of Gateways to Drawing: A Complete Guide, Thames and Hudson, Inc., New York and London, 978-0-500-29448-2. In addition to a British version, this comprehensive text has been translated in to French and Mandarin. Gardner also authored Gateways to Drawing: Sketchbook, ISBN 978-500-29451-2. Gardner has produced detailed garden illustrations for many magazines and books. He was a regular contributor to Better Homes and Gardens and Garden Deck & Landscape magazines. An array of his illustrations can also be seen in the book Small Gardens of Savannah and Thereabouts, Pelican Press. Stephen Gardner is Professor Emeritus at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where he has taught drawing and design classes since 1993. He serves as Associate Chair for the Foundations Studies Department. Stephen Gardner received a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and a M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design. |
